August 2024 — Canada is facing a serious health alert as Silk non-dairy milk products, including oat and coconut varieties, have been recalled due to potential listeria contamination. The recall, which initially began in July, was expanded earlier this week after a surge in reported illnesses. The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed that 20 cases of listeria infection have been linked to the contaminated products, resulting in three deaths and 15 hospitalizations.

The recall affects 18 different non-dairy milk products from the American brand Silk, as well as select items from the Great Value brand. The products were distributed across multiple provinces and territories in Canada. The Public Health Agency of Canada initially issued a warning in July, advising consumers to avoid specific almond, oat, cashew, and coconut milk products due to the risk of listeria. At that time, there had been two deaths and 12 reported cases.

As of the latest update, the situation has worsened, with an additional death and more people falling ill. The majority of those affected reported consuming the recalled products.
